CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – Six firefighters and paramedics were honored for their efforts to save a patient’s life in February 2023.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Cleveland Fire shared the story of the heroic actions taken by the crew.

Members of Engine 40 found a large patient in cardiac arrest at a home on Neff Road on Feb. 18, authorities said.

What made the job even more difficult was that the patient was pinned between the bed and the wall on the second floor, according to the post.

Firefighters said Capt. Eric Ross and Firefighter 4th Class Darren Duhaney removed the patient, Firefighter Eric Blake prepared defibrillator pads, and Firefighter 3rd Class Brooklynn Cistrunk performed CPR.

Emergency services arrived a short time later and paramedics Christopher Shenk and Matthew Lanzaretta administered multiple shocks and continuous CPR, and the patient’s pulse returned to normal, authorities said.

Firefighters said the patient resumed breathing and was transported to Euclid hospital.

“Members of Engine 40 and EMS Unit 40 were awarded the Distinguished Service Award for their teamwork, skill and professionalism in rescuing a patient from a difficult situation,” the post from the fire department reads.
