Patrick Mahomes Says His Ankle Injury at the End of the Chiefs Game Was ‘Scary’

Patrick Mahomes “a tough kid”!

The Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback suffered an injury and scare in the fourth quarter. Monday Night Football on Nov. 4 when he rolled his left ankle.

“It’s absolutely scary. I think it hurt more because it was the same ankle I rolled last week, so it kind of scared me a little bit,” Mahomes said after the extended thriller in which the Chiefs clung to their unbeaten record. “When you don’t know exactly, you feel that sharp pain no matter what, it’s always the worst. You fear the worst.”

Mahomes had just thrown a 7-yard touchdown pass to running back Samaje Perine when he apparently slipped on the grass and then fell to the ground with his head in his hands and cradling his ankle.

The 29-year-old Super Bowl MVP was carried off the field and entered the medical tent for evaluation.

“Obviously I was running towards the goal line and I was committed to running the football and at the last second I passed to Samaje and so I awkwardly rolled my ankle a little bit,” Mahomes later explained.

“You feel the pain and it scares you. I had dealt with ankle joints before, but I just laid there and the pain subsided as time went on. “I just kind of came back and started moving again and felt comfortable going there,” he said.

After the game, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid made his own comment about his quarterback’s toughness.

“I wasn’t sure exactly where he would be with this, but he might have the loosest ankles in America,” Reid told reporters. “It’s ridiculous how he can come back from these things and be mentally strong on top of it.”

Reid added, “Yes, he (Patrick Mahomes) is a contender. “I told him I was going to take him out and he wanted to fight me, so he’s a tough kid.”

Following the 30-24 victory over the Bucs, the Chiefs have an 8-0 record. The team will host the Denver Broncos on Sunday, November 10.
