Phoenix man claims property manager retaliated after reporting apartment problems

PHOENIX (AZ Family) — Eric Baber moved into his apartment on: 12 palms Last December in Phoenix. Nearly a year later, he is facing eviction, which he claims is retaliation for many of the problems he mentioned.

“Everyone is on edge because when people complain directly or to a government agency or just get the word out, they retaliate,” Baber said.

Baber sent a letter Zendoor Detailing the problems and requesting a refund at the end of September.

He claims he had to repair the window and door locks himself after unanswered service requests.

He also says that there was no water flowing for up to a month and the air conditioner was turning on and off. The biggest problem, he says, is what appears to be mold on the ceiling and in the bathroom vent.

Baber says he is not the only person living in these conditions on the site.

“I did everything within my contract, but I started to exercise my right to complain. Living with mold affecting my health. I live with cockroaches, I live without locks on my doors to stay safe,” Baber said.

Baber says after he sent the letter, an eviction notice was posted on his door the following month.

non-profit organization Arizona Fair Housing Center It’s investigating Baber’s case, but lawyers said cases like this are difficult to prove and consume resources that many people don’t have.

“There is a right to a refund, but it comes down to who enforces it?” said Ryan Winkle, executive director of the Arizona Fair Housing Center.

Arizona Landlord Tenant Law It states that if a tenant complains to a landlord or government agency about a violation, the landlord cannot retaliate. Baber is still pushing for accountability.

“This is all gross negligence and negligence,” Baber said.

Arizona Family reached out to Zendoor but did not receive a response.
