NIXA, Mo. (KY3) — State Route 160 is the main thoroughfare through Nixa. Some in the community are concerned about safety at the intersection on Aldersgate Drive following a crash there on Friday, November 1.

According to some in the community, the intersection is no stranger to accidents.

“It probably happens once a week,” said MJ King, who works near the busy intersection. “A few weeks ago I think we had three games a week. It was ridiculous.”

King said that accidents are common here and that he himself witnessed these accidents.

“We’ve been talking about this for months,” King said. “This was a huge problem. More than one person will come here. Hey, did your cameras record this accident so we can fix it?”

But this isn’t the first time concerns have been raised about the intersection. come back June 2021, Nixa police told KY3 News that the number of injury crashes in the first six months of that year increased from 3 to 12 the previous year. The Nixa Police Department said there hasn’t been an increase in accidents lately, but accidents may be more frequent due to the density of the intersection.

“There may be some that were reported and others that were not reported, but we don’t know that,” Officer Brent Forgey said. “It’s hard to pick a particular intersection and then find the exact statistics right away.”

The Nixa Police Department collects crash data, which is then sent to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, which compiles the information along with other data from departments across the state, according to Forgey. As of Nov. 4, MSHP does not have any data on the most recent crashes, but maps going back to 2021 show multiple crashes at Highway 160 and Aldersgate Drive.

Another thing to keep in mind, according to Forgey, is that the holidays are coming up, which means more people will be on the road and extra caution should be taken on days when severe weather impacts the area.

“No matter what intersection you are on the highway, you enter a t. Pay attention to road conditions. If you see traffic signs, speed limit signs slow down. “Be careful,” Forgey said. “It might be something you want to avoid, too.”

However, something needs to change for MJ King, who frequently encounters accidents here.

“I go through these back roads too, so I encounter the slower parts,” King said. “It’s absolutely scary watching all these cars go by here. “I’ve seen a lot of people operating these lights.”
