Barricades were erected during the repair of the I-471 bridge

CINCINNATI (WKRC) – Barricades have been set up around the closed section of southbound I-471. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is asking people to avoid the area.

A playground caught fire Friday, burning so hot and high that part of the bridge was damaged.

Southbound I-471 remains closed in Ohio. Pete Rose Way and Riverside Drive remain closed on both sides on the I-471 bridge approach.

One northbound lane remains closed.

The following restrictions also apply in downtown Cincinnati:

  • Liberty Street access to I-471 is closed.
  • 5th Street access to I-471 is closed.
  • US 50 East and West access to I-471 is closed. (US 50 remains open to traffic.)
  • Pete Rose Way/Riverside Drive is closed due to approach.
  • Eastbound Pete Rose Way drivers can use Eggleston Avenue.
  • Westbound Riverside Drive (US 52) should divert to Columbia Parkway (US 50).
  • The parking lot below the bridge approach adjacent to Pete Rose Way is closed.
  • Sawyer Point Park and all pedestrian and visitor facilities within the park are closed.

ODOT said contractors have been mobilized to begin work and are in the process of designing support towers that will be used to stabilize the damaged section of the approach. Utility company teams are also working on multiple issuances.

So far, ODOT has not said how long they expect the closures to remain in effect.
