INDEPENDENCE CO., Ark. (KAIT) – Deputies arrested a Cave City man after they say he led him on a high-speed chase that resulted in his vehicle becoming airborne.

On Sunday, Nov. 3, Independence District Sergeant Zachary Spohr was driving on School Road when he saw a dark-colored vehicle traveling on the left of the center lane turn into the driveway in front of him.

The incident report stated Spohr requested Deputy Cheyanne Mallory check on the driver’s condition.

Deputy Mallory activated his emergency lights when he saw the vehicle nearly hit Spohr’s patrol truck.

The incident report stated that the driver was passing through the cemetery on Cemetery Road.

The chase continued with the driver driving down the left side of the center lane at a high rate of speed and into the oncoming traffic lane. MPs called it “disrespect for human life”. At this point, “a large amount of smoke” began coming out of the vehicle.

As deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, the suspect entered a ditch and went around patrol cars. Deputies set up spikes at the intersection of Brustrom Lane and North Hill, but the suspect walked through ditches to avoid them.

According to the incident report, the vehicle continued at high speeds and ramped onto West 6th Street, causing the vehicle to become airborne.

The driver stopped at the intersection of 5th Avenue and Vine Street. That’s when deputies pulled Rodney Vance, 48, of Cave City, from the vehicle and tied him up.

During the search of the vehicle, the teams found a pill bottle containing many different medications behind the driver’s seat.

Vance was taken to the Independence County Detention Center on several charges, including eluding, reckless driving, failure to use a seatbelt and improper turning, among many other charges.
