Anyone entering here should be warned: This list is full of sweets, treats, and spooky foods! (Not all of them are actually spooky, but they are all Ree Drummond’s favorites this time of year.)

“I love Halloween“,” Ree gushes, “partly because of the costumes, partly because of the decorations… but mostly because of the food!” Historically, trick-or-treating in Pawhuska takes place one or two nights before October 31st. The children were young, and the Drummonds would ride in the back of Ladd’s truck with Tim, Missy, and their children, greeting their neighbors who would go door to door in droves, handing out candy to the little confectioners. I love trick-or-treating. our little town,” says Ree. “This is a community-wide effort.” Today, Trade (which coincidentally opens its doors on Halloween) hosts an annual festival of pumpkin painting, balloon art, and all kinds of yummy desserts.

Pumpkin Spice Cinnamon Roll

Ree’s cinnamon rolls are legendary. Still, she must admit that in all her years of trying different versions, she never considered adding spice to pumpkin pie until her “life changed forever” with this recipe. “The color is gorgeous,” she says, adding, “The flavors of the pumpkin and spice really shine through without being completely overwhelming.”

“The great thing about caramel apples is that the possibilities are endless,” says Ree. Decorate a hefty bushel of these bright dipped apples with crushed pretzels, pecans, or leftover Halloween candy.

Pumpkin Spice Cereal Treats

Merc made these treats for a Halloween party! They’re made with two layers of pillowy soft marshmallows mixed with crunchy rice cereal and warmly seasoned with pumpkin pie spice.

October is soup season in Ree’s kitchen, so it would be remiss not to include one of her favorites on any Halloween list. You can serve the hollowed-out zucchinis in bowls to make it “fancy,” as he calls it; either way, the result is “delicious, creamy and velvety smooth.”

Bark My favorite Halloween treat of all time!” says Ree, and she’s made many varieties over the years: Monster Shell, Spider Web Shelland this colorfully twisty candy corn-inspired bark. “Now put them in little cellophane bags, serve them on a plate, put them in little gift boxes… whatever makes you smile,” she adds.

If you’re hosting a crowd for a Halloween party or potluck, here’s the perfect dessert. “This is similar to the chocolate cake I’ve been making for 25 years, but with a pumpkin cream cheese version,” says Ree. “This will make you dance with joy.”

The Plate of Darkness

At their home on the farm, Ladd and the children loved watching horror movies and eating candy. If you have similar Halloween plans, this treat tray is “a fun way to mix things up,” as Ree says. Pictured: black licorice, jelly beans and M&Ms, chocolate chip cookies and chocolate-covered nuts and fruit. Ree’s cookie-covered caramel apples add a homemade touch.

Gingerbread in October? Why of course! From the archives Pioneering Female Chefs: A Year of Vacation, These cookies are easy to decorate. “Make everything look twisted, twisted, add a ghost, and do whatever other spooky things you can think of,” Ree suggests. “This is a really simple version, but think of the possibilities: black licorice snakes, spiders, candy corn.”
