Polling places in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia will open on Election Day. Here’s what you need to know to make sure you can vote in person at your polling place:

How to vote in person in DC?

In Washington, DC, voters can vote live by completing Same Day Registration or updating their information at their assigned precinct.

Same Day Registration:

If you are not registered, you can register at any polling station with acceptable proof of residence. Acceptable forms include: Current identification issued by DC DMV Recent bank statement or utility bill (dated within the last 90 days.) Lease or government document that includes your name and address.

Voting Process:

Once you provide proof of residence, you will complete the Registration Update Form and receive a live poll.

If proof of residence is not provided, you will vote by Special Ballot and must submit acceptable proof to be counted by 5:00 PM on the Thursday after Election Day.

How to vote in person in Maryland?

Marylanders have the option to vote in person during early voting or on election day. Early voting for the 2024 Presidential General Election will run from Thursday, October 24, 2024, through Thursday, October 31, 2024, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. You can vote early at any early voting center in your county.

Election Day:

Where: Your assigned polling place

Time: 7am to 8pm

Important Information:

You can bring one or two children under the age of 18 with you to vote, as long as it does not disrupt the voting process.

Cell phones, pagers, cameras and computers are not allowed at early voting centers or polling places.

You can bring printed materials, including a sample of a marked ballot, to assist you in voting.

First-time voters may be asked to show identification. Acceptable forms include: Current photo identification (e.g., Maryland driver’s license, U.S. passport) Current utility bill or bank statement (dated less than 3 months) with your name and address.

You can wear clothing, buttons or stickers with political messages, but you must leave the polling place immediately after voting.

Write-in votes are allowed in general elections but not in primaries. Written voting instructions will be posted at polling places.

If your employer requires proof that you voted, ask the election judge for a Certificate of Participation.

How to vote in person in Virginia?

Virginia law requires voters to present acceptable identification at the polls or sign an Identity Verification Affidavit.

Voting Requirements:

Voters who do not have acceptable identification may sign an Identity Verification Affidavit or vote provisionally.

Provisional voters must present their ID or sign an identity verification statement by noon on the Friday after the election for their votes to be counted.

Acceptable Forms of Identification:

Review the list of acceptable voter IDs before heading to the polls.

Provisional Voting Process:

Voters without ID will receive written instructions to present their ID or sign an ID verification statement after provisionally voting.

IDs or signed statements can be sent by fax, email, in person or by mail, but must be delivered to the local election board by noon on the Friday after the election.

Polls throughout the State of Virginia will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day, November 5.
