Dozens of people were taken to hospitals in the city due to traffic accidents on Diwali night.

King George Medical University’s (KGMU) Trauma Center alone admitted 82 traffic accident victims between Thursday night and Friday morning. As of Friday night, 54 more people were admitted to the Trauma Center.

KGMU spokesperson Dr. According to Sudhir Singh, of the 244 patients brought till Friday morning, 82 had road accidents. CMS Dr AS Tripathi said six patients who had road accidents were admitted to Lok Bandhu Hospital, two of whom required surgery. Director Dr Rajesh Srivastava said three such patients were being treated at Shyama Prasad Mukherjee (Civil) Hospital.

The regional transport office could not give an exact figure on how many road accidents occurred in the city on Diwali night. The UP State Road Transport Corporation said there were no bus accidents in Lucknow, but two occurred elsewhere – one in Etawah and the other in Deoria – with the latter causing many injuries.

“Thankfully, most of the road accident victims were brought in with minor injuries. Anticipating more serious injuries with a higher number of burns and road accident victims, we have prepared our emergency departments with additional doctors and staff,” shared Dr KK Singh, Faculty of General Surgery, KGMU. “Perhaps because we saw so few serious injuries resulting from Diwali celebrations, people were more cautious in their celebrations,” he added.
