Motorists are being warned about disruptions around Stoke-on-Trent railway station as the next phase of work to improve bus, pedestrian and cycle routes begins.

The work is part of a £29 million program aimed at improving the station’s connectivity with the city center and improving the environment.

Asphalting works have started along with the new drainage system to prevent floods.

From Monday, the car park next to the Royal Mail sorting office will be closed until the end of June next year while work continues around Winton Square.

The council said anyone traveling to the station during this period is strongly advised to allow extra time for their journey.

During the work, the bus stop outside the Federation Building will be temporarily moved to the station side of the carriageway and access to businesses on Station Road will still be possible.

The pedestrian crossing in Winton Square will continue to be used and a taxi rank will be temporarily located outside the square.

Long-term parking will be available in the second car park, located at the north end of the first platform, and in the third car park behind the station.

The municipality said there will be a 20-minute free drop-off service at car park 3 and disabled parking will be available in both car parks.

Councilor Finlay Gordon-McCusker, cabinet member for transport, infrastructure and regeneration, said he was pleased to see work to improve the city’s transport links progressing.

“There will be some disruption as this work continues and we realize this may be frustrating for drivers, but I want to reassure everyone it will be worth it in the end,” he said.

“This project will create more space for pedestrians and cyclists, help reduce traffic flow around the station, improve the appearance of the station and importantly give us a better connection with the city centre.

“So please bear with us and remember to allow a little extra time for your trip.”
