Washington Commanders Lead New York Giants 21-7 in the First Half of Week 9

East Rutherford, NJ — Washington Commanders They face the New York Giants in New Jersey, looking for their seventh overall this season as well as their second NFC East Division win.

Commanders and the Giants quickly converted a three-and-out to start the game before the action began.

On the second possession of the game for New York, the team came out with their brains and did it effectively. After three explosive runs in a row brought them down washington 29, the Giants ran their first pass play after five down the field and it cost them dearly.

Coming in from the right side of the defense, Commanders edge defender Dante Fowler Jr. knocked the ball out of the hands of New York quarterback Daniel Jones, and the ball was recovered — after some leaps and dramatic moves — by linebacker Bobby Wagner. to the home team’s 31-yard line.

Three plays later, quarterback Jayden Daniels started the scoring by connecting on a one-yard slant to Washington receiver Terry McLaurin, hitting kicker Austin Seibert’s extra point to give the visiting good guys a 7-0 lead.

The Giants’ third drive of the game started much like the second, with nine runs scored in the first 10 plays of possession. Unfortunately, as you might guess from that line there, the drive included three third-down conversions over the course of those 10 plays. In total, New York’s first scoring drive went through 16 plays, 13 of which were offensive, and consumed nearly 10 minutes. The final play resulted in a two-yard touchdown pass from Jones to tight end Chris Manhertz to tie the score at 7.

It was Jones’ first home goal since January 1, 2023.

Needing to give their defense some time to rest and regroup, the Commanders’ offense tied it up on the game’s third drive. Fortunately, Washington’s offense showed the ability to be a little more balanced, and after eight runs and three passes, Austin Ekeler capped off the third drive of the game with another red zone touchdown.

This score and the extra point gave the Commanders a 14-7 lead with 6:21 left in the first half. The scoring drive featured the first explosive play of the day for Washington and a fourth-and-one conversion at the New York 12-yard line.

A second three-and-out forced by the Commanders’ defense gave the ball back to the offense in anticipation of taking the ball to start the second half, giving them plenty of time to take complete control of the game with a score late in the half.

The effort was aided by another fourth down conversion, this time on Ekeler’s one-yard run at NYG35, which gave Washington a new streak of downs at the 34 with almost a minute left in the half. Head coach Dan Quinn had all three timeouts in his back pocket if he needed them.

Quinn used one of those with 40 seconds left, and a holding penalty erased a solid run by Daniels as his offense got 2nd and 20 at the New York 44.

He used his second of the half with 20 seconds left, converting a short gain to 3rd-and-18 from the Giants’ 42-yard line.

The third timeout was called after a big catch and a receiver run. Dyami Brown took the ball to the New York 18 with 11 seconds left. The 24-yard play not only set up the first score, but also Daniels’ second touchdown pass to McLaurin from 18 yards out.

It was a masterful display of time and timeout management, a beautiful pass from Daniels and a 21-7 lead for the Commanders entering the locker room.

Washington will also get the ball back to start the second half.
