Week 9 in the NFL begins with the match between the 6-1 Detroit Lions and the 6-2 Green Bay Packers at the historic Lambeau Field.

With Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love’s status up in the air and mixed weather on the horizon, my Lions-Packers predictions are calling for a lower-scoring matchup.

I’m leaning towards the Packers on points, but I recommend waiting until closer to game time. If it becomes clear that Willis will start (and I expect he will as the Packers’ bye approaches), we need to get Green Bay above the key number of 3.0.

With such a short spread and upset potential in this rivalry game, it also makes sense to consider the Packers ML at +120.

Although Willis has been impressive this year, he is still disconnected from Love. Especially his ability to spread the ball and handle reads. The Packers also leaned heavily on the run when Willis started, and they’ll likely use the same game plan here — especially with rain and high winds in the forecast.

There is a 94% chance of showers with winds just above the 15 mph threshold affecting down throws on the course. The Lions benefit from playing their home games indoors, and their offense is much less explosive when exposed to the elements.

As mentioned above, the bad weather, the fact that Willis was probably at QB for the Packers, and the fact that Detroit was struggling openly on offense made me beat it.

It is also worth noting that Detroit is a high-tempo team that eats up time and leads to less possession. Additionally, the Packers’ defense was solid. They rank fourth in the league in defensive EPA since Week 3, holding their foes to just 4.0 yards per carry.

Both teams play at a slow tempo; Detroit averages the fourth-most seconds per snap (28.4), with Green Bay close behind (28.1).

Since I’m expecting a mixed aerial game with both teams relying on rushing attacks, it makes sense to weaken Goff’s passing attempts. Especially since he hasn’t completed more than 25 passes in his last five games.

Being able to increase the Packers spread to over a touchdown and still get a good payout from that PPP is worth it.
