FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — A 37-year-old man wanted on charges out of Chesterfield County and a bystander were shot by deputies at a gas station in Fredericksburg Saturday night, according to authorities.

Deputies with the Spotsylvania County Street Crimes Task Force attempted to arrest Lawrence D. Toler II of Woodford at a gas station in the 3000 block of Plank Road at 8:50 p.m., when Virginia State Police officials said he tried to drive away.

“As deputies approached the suspect’s vehicle, (he) attempted to flee and returned to a deputy’s vehicle,” Sgt. wrote Brent W. Coffey of the Virginia State Police. “Toler then pointed the firearm at a deputy when multiple deputies discharged their service weapons.”

Both men were taken to Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg. Authorities said the bystander was treated and released, while Toler remained hospitalized Sunday with life-threatening injuries.

A firearm was seized at the scene, but authorities said there was no indication that Toler fired his weapon.

According to Chesterfield Police officials, Toler was wanted on warrants out of Chesterfield for kidnapping, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Those arrest warrants were from an October incident in which police said Toler and another man kidnapped a victim, took him to another location and then robbed him.

The victim, who authorities said knew the suspect, was not injured, according to a police department spokesman.

“The investigation is ongoing,” Coffey said. “Once the state police complete their investigation, the criminal investigation file will be turned over to the Fredericksburg Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office for review and determination.”
