SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CNS) — One person was killed and two others were injured when a tanker trunk overturned on the northbound Port (110) Freeway at Manchester Boulevard, spilling 500 to 1,000 gallons of aviation fuel onto the roadway, the Los Angeles Fire Department said Sunday.

LAFD spokeswoman Margaret Stewart said the crash was reported at 10:55 p.m. Saturday and responding personnel found one person dead under the tanker truck.

The tanker driver was reportedly transported to the hospital by private vehicle and had no contact with LAFD responders. The 30-year-old woman, who was slightly injured, was taken to hospital by paramedics.

Firefighters used a redwood plug to stop a leak in the tanker, which held an estimated 8,000 gallons of aviation fuel, Stewart said.

LAFD crews assisted CalTrans in deploying an absorber to control and reduce spilled fuel, officials said.

Once that process is complete, Stewart said the tanker truck owner will handle unloading the fuel while the LAFD will provide safety oversight. He added that firefighters will also assist the LA County Medical Examiner in extricating the victim from the vehicle, which may require the truck to be corrected.

The California Highway Patrol has issued a SigAlert for the northbound 110 freeway in Manchester for an unknown period of time, and drivers are advised to seek alternate routes for the northbound and southbound lanes between Slauson and Rosecrans avenues while cleanup efforts continue.
