WAIEHU, Hawaii (KHNL/Gray News) – First responders in Hawaii say a 61-year-old surfer was bitten by a shark and had his leg amputated just below the knee.

A 61-year-old surfer was seriously injured when he was bitten by a shark in the waters off Waiehu Beach Park on the island of Maui shortly after 7 a.m. Friday morning, police said. KHNL reports.

Relatives identified the surfer as “Kenji” on GoFundMe It was founded to raise money to help his recovery. His friends said he was a regular at the surf spot known as “Sandpiles” where the incident occurred.

Sources say Kenji was sitting on his surfboard when the shark swam up and bit his leg. Witnesses who heard the victim’s screams said other surfers helped him swim to shore.

“I heard this scream and looked. “All of a sudden I saw water splashing and I don’t know what happened,” said witness David Basques. “He swam by himself more than half the way, and then I saw someone jump into the water. They went to bring him in.”

Officers applied two tourniquets to Kenji’s leg before paramedics and fire personnel arrived, police said. First responders confirmed his leg was completely amputated just below the knee.

“I want to congratulate the patient for the strength and resources he showed in getting to shore. I mean, it’s remarkable. “Whatever assistance the Good Samaritans provided, I would like to recognize them as well,” said Maui Fire Department Deputy Chief Jeff Giesea.

The victim remains treated at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

According to GoFundMe, Kenji said in the intensive care unit immediately after surgery: “I still love the ocean!”

Authorities have closed the beach park and lifeguards are patrolling the waters. Beachgoers are asked to stay out of the water from Paukkalo to Waihee until further notice.
