Democrats hold a slim 51-49 majority in the Senate with 34 seats up for grabs on Tuesday; The key is in Arizona, where Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego faces Republican challenger Kari Lake.

“They feel largely left out of politics,” Gallego told CBS News. “And we’re talking to them about bringing politics back to them.”

Polls show Lake, a former local television anchor, consistently leading Gallego, a former Marine, in the closely watched race. Surveys also show Former President Donald Trump has a narrow lead over Vice President Kamala Harris in the state.

“So a lot of these Republicans are over-supporting because they know me, they work for me, and they don’t like the extremism in Lake Kari,” Gallego said. “There’s also the fact that I’m a Latino sailor.”

Gallego believes Harris can help her case in Arizona by continuing to highlight her “economic plan” and mentioning the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

“Latino men are very patriotic,” Gallego said. “They understand what happened on January 6th.”

An ardent proponent of MAGA, Lake focused his campaign on voters’ concerns about inflation and migration.

“We’re at ground zero of the border crisis because the border is open. Frankly, the economy has made the cost of living in Arizona really unaffordable, and at the same time we’re seeing an increase in crime on our streets,” Lake told reporters this week. .

Lake got help Saturday from Trump’s running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio, as the two held a rally in Scottsdale.

Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, also lobbied voters in Tucson on Saturday; To close the gap, the Harris campaign sent boxes of supplies to volunteers across the state, hoping to knock on as many as 200,000 doors before Election Day.
