Houston Heights bar owner remembered by community after death

The community comes together to support the family of Steve ‘BJ’ Rodriquez. A bar owner was tragically shot and killed outside his business on Sunday.

The Houston Police Department said the incident happened around 2:30 a.m. at 2727 North Freeway. One more person was seriously injured in the conflict.

In the wake of heartbreak, the family and friends of the late business owner turn their grief into action. His loved ones organized an event in front of Tequila B’s bar to commemorate the entrepreneur.

“We’re just here to raise money. You know everything was unexpected and we’re just trying to make it through and be here for the family,” said Mari Cruz Reyes, BJ’s aunt.

The purpose of the meeting is not only to celebrate BJ’s life, but also to raise funds to support his family during this difficult time.

“He was very well-liked. He was very well-known. He was always willing to help when people were having trouble. People needed help for their families. He was there,” said Marissa Rodriquez, BJ’s daughter.

BJ’s hard work and entrepreneurial spirit lives on at Tequila B’s bar, located just off the Northern Freeway.

“He was definitely a good businessman and could create something out of nothing,” Rodriquez said.

“He was a very funny person. A very positive person. He was a very firm believer in God,” said close friend Gaby Tovar.

BJ leaves behind four children, three daughters and one son. His family and friends said he may be gone but will never be forgotten.

Reyes Cruz said, “Keep us in your prayers. Protect his sister, his daughter and everyone who loved him. He was loved by many.”

All proceeds from the event will be used to support BJ’s funeral expenses and his family.
