Odessa consultants share signs

ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – This week is Anti-Bullying Week, and a counselor at Gale Pond Alamo Elementary School is sharing signs parents should look out for in their children.

“I think everyone can have a bad day, so there’s a difference between having a bad day with a new kid at school and behaving badly, and there’s something that happens constantly and is harmful and the repetition of that is bullying.” said Celeste Galindo, a counselor at Gale Pond Elementary School.

Galindo said there are several signs parents should look out for.

“If you see low energy and also if you see that they don’t really want to come to school,” he said. “I actually ask them how their day was, and if they tell you, ‘I really don’t want to go,’ ask why. Investigate what’s really going on.”

The Texas Anti-Bullying Coalition shared that one in five children are bullied, but school intervention programs can reduce that number by 25%.

“We always tell our kids that we are here to keep you safe,” Galindo said. “It’s our job to keep you safe.”

Galindo also shares that her school teaches students the differences between being rude, being mean, and bullying, and encourages students to report any signs of bullying to a trusted adult.
