Westbound lanes of the Sunrise Expressway were closed at exit 48 in Bohemia while Suffolk County police investigated a crash, according to a department spokeswoman.

Suffolk police did not provide details about the crash or estimate when the lanes would reopen, but said the crash appeared serious.

The New York State Department of Transportation 511 website showed the freeway was closed from Exit 48 for Smithtown and Locust avenues to Exit 46 at Carleton Street in Islip.

Police said the crash was reported around 3:37 p.m.
