Southern Colorado family gets support after SNAP benefits stolen

Husband and father in Pueblo reached out to News5 In mid-October, she received an unexpected surprise regarding the theft of her SNAP benefits.

SNAP benefits help low-income people buy food. When News 5 first spoke with Tayfoya, she said a representative from the state’s SNAP benefits office told her she would have to wait for November benefits to arrive and wait up to 90 days for the stolen benefits to be repaid.

When she learned this, her concern turned to how she would feed her four sons. Days after Tafoya spoke out about her frustrating experience, many people donated money to get her and her family through the next month. Although it was unexpected, he says he’s grateful for the support.

“Thanks to everyone who helped us. I’m like just saying it’s great that people came out and showed support like that. It helped with a lot of stress and stuff like that. It was really nice. It went a lot smoother than I expected.”

Tafoya said people in Southern Colorado donated hundreds of dollars in gift cards and cash. Tayfoya says that thanks to the support of this community, her children did not miss a meal in October.
