Hawley speaks enthusiastically about Porsches; its admiration for them is eclipsed only by its penchant for improving the originals by picking up where the German firm left off. The 911 was always an expensive, enthusiast car, but it was also always a mass-produced, type-approved product, with all the restrictions that come with it. But Hawley has no such concerns, and the big budgets he works with mean he can help the 964 reach its potential without having to take that into account.

“We’re basically making concept cars for the road,” he says. “This is extremely liberating.” Obviously swapping out the steelwork for carbon fiber (something Theon could do) will change the feel of the car, but the famed mechanics in Hawley’s stable can install and tune an engine and gearbox to the customer’s preference. All the variables that determine a car’s behavior and performance are in Hawley’s hands; Sitting in the driver’s seat is an insight into the special creative process he shares with the client.
