LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – In-person early voting is over in Nevada. If you still want to have your voice heard, you will need to mail your ballot in or go to a polling place on Election Day.

On Friday, Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar, who oversees Nevada elections, took questions from local and national media about our process and making sure it is fair and secure.

There is a lot of interest in Nevada as a very important swing state in this election. Observers from the Department or the Department of Justice and the FBI will be here to make sure there are no problems.

Aguilar says so far there have been no problems with polling places or cybersecurity.

“Voting will be safe and secure and the results will be accurate… We welcome observers and anyone who wants to examine how we do things here in Nevada because we do them the right way,” Aguilar said.

Aguilar says Nevada is an open book. It has one of the most secure voting systems in the country and an election plan that has been in the works for the last 18 months.

“I have to be careful not to reveal our entire security plan for many reasons, but I can say that we are in communication with the sheriffs in our counties. We have our Election Integrity Task Force, which is made up of federal, state and local law enforcement. “We are communicating daily about the issues,” Aguilar said.

Aguilar says mail-in ballots and the signature identification system are working as intended.

“There are multiple databases with signatures that we need to get. If the signature matches, it’s processed. Otherwise, it goes into a bipartisan review. Aguilar said for this to be processed, both a Democrat and a Republican have to agree that the signatures match.”

A new system was introduced this year that provides an extra layer of security and catches people trying to vote twice.

“There have been some issues with double votes that we’ve been able to catch… If someone was going from Nye County to Carson City and they voted, we could catch that voter trying to double vote from county to county, and if a person was sending their ballots in the mail and then going to the polling place,” Aguilar said. “Since the system is real-time, it is immediately investigated,” he explained.

While we don’t know the exact number of double votes in this election so far, the Secretary of State has announced that he has three full-time investigators dealing with these matters. Sometimes they say it was an accident, sometimes they say it was intentional. If a person is found to have deliberately double-voted, they will be referred to arbitration for criminal charges.
