Family mourns father hit by driver while working at I-75 construction site

A. Detroit Metro The family is mourning the loss of a father and husband when a driver struck and killed him while doing construction on I-75.

Jeffrey McLeod, 53, of Lincoln Park, died Wednesday, Nov. 5..

“My father was one of the best and most generous men I have ever known,” said McLeod’s son, Dylan McLeod.

Police said McLeod set up a flare between construction vehicles in the right lane and the driver of a 71-year-old Kia sedan swerved into the right lane and struck him.

“There were street signs, there were trucks, there were arrow boards, there were flares, and he was doing his job right.

Dylan said. “He was safe and this terrible, tragic event was still happening.”

Jeffrey was a husband, father and grandfather.

“Even though he worked hard, he still made time to be there for everyone,” Dylan said.

The McLeods urge drivers to be careful around construction areas.

“If you see the construction, know that they are working there and trying to get home safe,” Dylan said. “You may be trying to get home safely, and they may be trying to get home safely.”

There have been 24 workplace deaths in Michigan in 2023, according to the Office of Highway Safety Planning.
