Manvel residents question how 2 officers responded to call about injured dog

They say officers left the dog behind, saying he wouldn’t be able to pick it up for at least two days.

FOX 26 spoke Manvel Police Chief Keith Traylor.

He says his officers’ response to the dog was unfortunate and new procedures are in place so something like this won’t happen again.

“He was probably thrown out of the car or hit by a car,” said Cindy Cortinas of Lone Star Pawz Rescue.

No one knows exactly what happened to this cub, now named Jackson. But it was clear that he desperately needed help.

“He knew his leg was probably broken and he had a head injury and called the Manvel Police Department,” Cindy said.

“The other cop came with a leash and the dog was laying here, the cop put the leash on wrong. The leash was over his ear so the dog could slide out easily,” said 14-year-old Jackson. Cernoch.

Apparently, two police officers told Michelle Coates last Friday that the dog could not be picked up until Monday.

“There was no one to get animal control and they were done,” Michelle said. “They didn’t go there and give him nothing. The only person who could get to the bottom of it, as close as he did, was Jackson. That dog didn’t want anyone but Jackson.”

Lone Star Pawz Rescue saw a Facebook post about the dog and took him to the vet.

“He put the leash on her and picked her up and carried her outside,” Cindy said. “He never tried to attack us. Even though he was in a lot of pain and his leg was hanging.”

Jackson had surgery on his leg and is currently recovering. He is with a foster and hopefully he will find his forever home soon.

Cindy said the police response was unacceptable.

“It really is. We now have two animal control officers. Not one, but two,” he said.

Chief Traylor said they are in the process of building an animal control unit from scratch and started last November.

Since this incident, both animal control officers have become certified and now have on-call procedures.

Lone Star Pawz named the dog Jackson.

“They asked my name, I said Jackson. So they named the dog after me,” he said.

The best part of this story is that Jackson is on his way to a happy life.

“And my son has a dog named after him,” Michelle said.
