HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A 61-year-old surfer was seriously injured in a shark attack at Waiehu Beach Park Friday morning, Maui police said.

The incident occurred shortly after 7 a.m.

Sources said the victim was sitting on the board when the shark swam up and bit his leg.

Witnesses who heard the victim’s screams said other surfers helped him swim to shore.

MPD said officers applied a tourniquet to the surfer’s leg before paramedics and fire personnel arrived.

The victim remains treated at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Authorities have closed the beach park and lifeguards are patrolling the waters.
