Additionally, New York City has officially designated Diwali as a public school holiday, making the celebration even more special for the city’s community.

Speaking to ANI, Dilip Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner, New York City Mayor’s Office of International Affairs, said, “Diwali is special this year. For the first time in New York history, schools will be closed on Friday, November 1. It is not easy to declare a public holiday in New York, where 1.1 million students study. “Many community leaders started this movement years ago, but eventually, under the direction of New York City, they declared November 1 as a school holiday.”

“Diwali has significance for other communities as well. When they see it, they will learn about Hindu culture. We always talk about diversity, but this is the best way to reflect diversity. It’s not easy because New York state has a requirement that there be a minimum number of instructional days in school, they have to change a holiday and then they added Diwali as a public holiday. This year, after Halloween night, there is no pressure to go to school the next day. Very Happy Diwali,” Chauhan added.

US President Joe Biden hosted a Diwali celebration at the White House on October 28, which was also his last celebration before the presidential election on November 5.
