BUTTE, Mont. — A judge increased a Spokane man’s bail to $1 million after prosecutors alleged he distributed fentanyl that resulted in a fatal overdose.

Christopher Garofalo was originally indicted in district court on October 16 on three counts of possession of dangerous drugs with intent to distribute.

While working on a drug investigation in coordination with the Montana Department of Criminal Investigation on Oct. 10, law enforcement officers said they found 2,000 suspected fentanyl pills, 30 grams of suspected cocaine and approximately 1 pound of suspected meth following a search of Garofalo’s truck. guarantee.

Garofalo was driving the truck when he was stopped by law enforcement on Interstate 90 and was handcuffed when law enforcement found a suspected methamphetamine smoking device on him.

Garofalo posted $75,000 bond on Oct. 15, but was arrested again when he appeared in court last week because of evidence law enforcement said he violated the conditions of his release by traveling to Spokane.

Prosecutors said a fellow inmate of Garofalo called one of his friends and asked them to pick up his truck, which was said to have drugs and money inside.

Garofalo’s friend and another person sampled the fentanyl powder.

Prosecutors say one of those men died of a fatal overdose; the other was put on a ventilator and was recently removed.

Additional charges are possible for Garofalo and others involved in the situation.

At Thursday’s hearing, Judge Kurt Krueger denied the defense’s request that Garofalo post a property bond.
