Former CPS student sexually assaulted repeatedly by security guard during school hours: lawsuit

CHICAGOA lawsuit was filed against him Chicago Board of Education and for allegations that he was a former security guard at a local high school. repeated sexual assault and abuse He was a 15-year-old student at the time.

The complaint, filed by Lane Brown, LLC on behalf of the plaintiff, identified as John Doe, describes sexual assaults that occurred during school hours in 2021.

John Doe, now 18, said he was targeted by school security guard Tywain Carter on his first day at Dunbar Vocational Career Academy because of his age, size and status as a new transfer student. The guard promised to protect John Doe from bullies at school and gained his family’s trust by meeting his mother, attorneys said.

The complaint detailed how Carter’s grooming tactics included daily encounters with the student, including taking John Doe out of class almost every day and into secluded areas such as the faculty computer lab only to sexually assault her.

The lawsuit accused Carter, who pleaded guilty in 2023 to sexual assault and harassment of John Doe and another student at Dunbar, with repeated acts of sexual assault and harassment. Six members of the high school staff allegedly witnessed Carter’s behavior and failed to report it to the required authorities, per Chicago Board of Education policies and training, according to the documents.

The lawsuit alleged that Carter used physical force on John Doe, such as pushing her against a wall, choking her, and sexually assaulting her.

The abuse came to light when John Doe informed his mother about the events; This led to reports being filed with Chicago police and the school, which then led to the security guard’s arrest and confession.

“How many people do it take to be removed from the classroom without permission before the staff begins to question the security guard’s behavior? I am disappointed in the school,” John Doe said in a statement.

John Doe’s attorneys are seeking at least $50,000 for each of the six charges presented in the complaint.

“(John Doe} should be compensated under our law for the great harm he has suffered,” said Nick Kamenjarin, John Doe’s attorney. “He certainly wants an apology and an acknowledgment by CPS of what happened to him, but they have not yet reached out to him to find out how he is or to apologize.” “I informed you.”

CPS released the following statement in response:

“The safety and well-being of our staff and students are top priorities and essential conditions for our school communities. Chicago Public Schools (CPS) actively works to prevent sexual abuse and thoroughly addresses all reports of abuse.
