Milwaukee bakery celebrating Día de los Muertos is busy filling orders

A local bakery is preparing a special treat for Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) to honor deceased loved ones and bring families together.

“Today we are busy baking bread for the Day of the Dead,” said restaurant owner Heladio Garcia. Del Valle Oaxaqueño Restaurante and La Casa Del Pan #2on Mitchell Street.

We celebrate Día de Muertos

“We personalize them with whatever names they want or whatever the customer wants,” Garcia added.

He says the details in the decoration pay homage to Mexico’s indigenous culture, and the colors sprinkled celebrate this and give it a festive atmosphere.

“We can have bread. We have special breads for the altar, and we also have some to share for the family. A lot of people come in and order a special bread for the altar or share it with the family,” Garcia said.

He says they’ve received about 300 orders from customers from Fond du Lac, Madison and out of state.

“It’s delicious. I buy one for the altar in my office, and then I buy another to take home,” Itzel Ramirez said.

“I’m taking one to share with my family at our gathering,” Candida Jose Gonzalez said.

It is a special treat to bring families together and welcome loved ones who have passed away.

“It’s a beautiful tradition that we celebrate in Mexico. This is the way to continue it here and share it with others,” Garcia said.

The bakery will be making this traditional bread by November 2nd, so there’s still time to head out.
