A man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for violently assaulting, strangling and sexually assaulting a stranger in his own home.

The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was seriously injured in Goodwick. pembrokeshireThis year on the evening of May 24th.

Benjamin Guiver, 34, of Fishguard, was arrested near the home shortly after the brutal attack.

One of the victim’s family, who came home during the attack, also intervened and was injured.

Dyfed-Powys Police praised the bravery of both the victim and the family member who intervened and chased Guiver out of the house.

Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Briggs said the woman was “seriously injured” and “incredibly distressed”.

The victim told police he didn’t think he would survive the attack.

He said he fell asleep while watching television and woke up to find a man in the living room.

He said his name was Benjamin and that he had come to “save her.”

The victim asked who he was, but the man told him “don’t ask any questions or I’ll kill you.”

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said the woman fled the property but Guiver caught her, punched her and dragged her inside by her hair.

That’s when he sexually assaulted her.

‘Take care of me for the rest of my life’

Police said Guiver had previously tried to break into another nearby home.

He was subsequently charged with sexual assault by penetration, causing grievous bodily harm with intent, strangulation with intent, trespass with intent to commit a sexual offence, threats to kill and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He admitted all the offenses in July and was sentenced at Swansea Crown Court on Thursday.

In an impact statement, the woman said she was “a shell of her former self” and felt “lost, insecure and nervous”.

He said his life had “turned upside down” and he “no longer felt safe in his own home”.

“I want so badly to get back to some kind of normalcy in my life, but I know what happened will continue to haunt me for the rest of my life,” she added.

Jessie Walling, of the CPS, said in a statement: “The physical and sexual violence inflicted on this woman by a complete stranger in her own home was appalling.”
