The Los Angeles Dodgers clinched the 2024 World Series title by defeating the New York Yankees 7-6 in Game 5 on Wednesday night.

It was the eighth championship in franchise history, and while the celebrations were in full swing in New York, parts of Los Angeles took a dark turn.

According to USA Today Sports:

The Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series by beating the New York Yankees in Game 5. While many fans were celebrating, police said many businesses were looted and property destroyed as some celebrations turned “violent”.

In addition to the looting, a subway bus was also set on fire by a hostile mob, Los Angeles Police said.

Certainly a disappointing event for what should have been such a joyful event for so many. The Dodgers will now return home for a parade through the city, something they didn’t get a chance to experience after the 2020 COVID championship.

The Dodgers were projected to win the World Series after acquiring Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Tyler Glasnow over the past few years, but this win was still a testament to the group’s durability. Ohtani didn’t pitch all season, while Clayton Kershaw didn’t pitch for most of it. Yamamoto and Glasnow missed significant time due to injury, and Dustin May and Tony Gonsolin also missed the entire year due to injury.

With Ohtani (likely) pitching next season and Glasnow returning, the Dodgers will remain favorites for the 2025 World Series title. They have also recently been linked to superstar free agent Juan Soto.
