20mph speed limit areas to be expanded as councils share £14m for road safety

Scotland’s 32 councils will share £14 million from the Scottish Government to improve road safety.

This package includes £4 million to introduce 20mph limits on more roads.

The government has also published implementation guidance for the introduction of the new speed limit, which emphasizes “extensive” consultation with affected residents.

Earlier this month, Transport Minister Fiona Hyslop warned that road deaths this year were up 26% compared to the same period in 2023.

Ms Hyslop said: “Road safety is a top priority for the Scottish Government, which is why we’re investing a record £36 million this financial year into initiatives that reduce road deaths.

“This £14 million investment underlines our commitment to supporting our road safety partners to implement programs that protect the public.

“I am pleased to see that all 32 of Scotland’s local authorities receive this support as we work towards our ambitious security targets.

“Issuing our 20mph enforcement guidance will help local authorities consistently enforce lower speed limits across Scotland, creating safer streets for everyone.

“Our ambition to make Scotland’s roads the safest in the world by 2030 remains unwavering.”
