It’s a busy morning and Natty, Julie, Belle and Haneul appear on Zoom in their casual casual clothes. The girls settle comfortably into their seats, smiling and exchanging casual glances as they talk, communicating quietly and with unspoken understanding the way close friends often do. Julie and Belle guide the conversation, translating for both Natty and Haneul.

They haven’t done many interviews like this, and there are moments where they lean on each other for support. When asked if the confidence in their music and performances comes naturally to them, Julie begins: “In some ways, definitely.” Belle interjects: “Sometimes we pretend too… Is that the right word?” Julie laughs and offers an alternative: “Try it. This confidence shines through in the aura of Kiss of Life. Last year the grouphush“, a captivating blend of R&B rhythm, vocal harmonies, and whistled notes (courtesy of Belle), speaks to the group’s mastery of the genre. The eponymous EP also featured solo tracks to highlight each member’s individual talents and sensibilities: “Sugarcoat,” Natty’s slinky ’90s R&B number a co-signer From BTS’ RM; “Countdown,” a great pop song co-written and produced by Belle; “Kitty Cat,” an unapologetic hip hop track from Julie; and Haneul’s fun anthem “Play Love Games” interspersed with “Take Me Out To The Ballgame”. Their next EP I Was Born To Be XXdoubled down on attitude with lead single “Bad News,” a powerful pop ballad with a strong guitar lick, and B-side cut “Nobody Knows,” a pure R&B track that nods to the velvet textures of 1970s soul. Her 2024 single “Midas Touch” embraced the synthetic soundscapes of Y2K-era pop, while her flirtatious summer follow-up “Sticky” showcased her sultry essences, drawing inspiration from laid-back Afrobeats.

This musical versatility is at the heart of Kiss of Life’s mission. The group, whose name symbolizes CPR, sees themselves as a “breath of fresh air” to the industry. “The meaning behind The Kiss of Life is that we want to be a breath of fresh air to everyone,” says Julie. The band aims to bring life to life with their music by focusing on themes that resonate deeply. “Our lyrics and concepts are about being confident, being ourselves, and pursuing freedom,” Belle adds. “We want to send the message that it’s okay to not be perfect. There is beauty that comes from imperfections.”
