A school headteacher has resigned following a series of strikes over allegations of bullying and discrimination earlier this year.

Gareth Nichols resigned from his post at Sir Francis Hill Community Primary School in Lincoln on Monday.

Allegations about a toxic working environment at the school in Bristol Drive emerged in December and three unions (NASUWT, National Education Union and Unison) called for strike action.

Mr. Nichols said he denied the bullying allegations.

In a letter to parents seen by reporters, Mr Nichols said: “Whilst I completely deny the allegations made, including those on social media, I believe it is in the best interests of all concerned for me to step down from my position now allowing everyone to move forward at the school.”

“As everyone is no doubt aware, it has been a very difficult time for me and my family.”

Mr Nichols said he had “worked tirelessly to deliver significant improvements at the school” over the past six-and-a-half years, adding that he was “extremely proud” of all the students and their numerous achievements.

A school spokesman said: “We would like to take this opportunity to thank him for his years of service and wish him all the best for the future.”

The first picket line was held outside the school in April, and further strikes continued until an agreement was reached in early June.

Lincolnshire County Council previously said the suspension of industrial action followed “productive discussions between the school and the unions”.

The official was approached for comment on Mr Nichols’ resignation but had nothing to add. Local Democracy Reporting Service,
