After just 14 years, Red Dead Redemption has finally been released on PC, and the good news is that Rockstar didn’t screw it up. Far from the GTA Trilogy-style disaster some feared, this is an instant The best way to play a classicand it’s such a good game that some prefer it to its superior sequel.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that Red Dead Redemption is perfect. There’s a lot of room for improvement, and modders have already started changing everything they didn’t like in the game. “I like the way he looks without the beard,” says Serhishols. For some, this is not enough. Arthur Morgan Restoration Project apparently “it’s a joke, so it doesn’t look very good” and yet someone takes it quite seriously: “he replaces John with the far superior Arthur Morgan.” Arthur may be far superior, but he doesn’t appear to be like that.

It gets really detailed. Want a mod that changes the color of UI icons to those used in the 2009 beta? And voila! PlayStation button giving warnings? No problem. There’s the usual array of mods that let you skip the starting logos, but how about mods that specifically just remove the Double Eleven logo “for a more original RDR experience”? Boom.

Oh, we’re not even close to being done. If you want 3x resolution on the weapon wheel, you got it. “HAVE YOU EVER WANTED A CLOSED CAMERA? THIS IS IT!” Loot faster! Make your lawn luxurious!

What I like most is the laser aiming All the Chickens Were Killed and the Rabbits Rescued. If you’ve played the opening chapter of the game, or as modder Corpiss puts it, “It’s just a save file for OCD sufferers who don’t want to replay that whole long intro chapter where all the rabbits are killed and the chickens are saved from the coyotes.”

Finally, “John Marston watches Neon Genesis Evangelion in a movie theater, circa 1911.” A+, no grades.
