RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. — Beachfront residents on Singer Island are wondering if the damage to a 19-story condominium is dangerous.

It’s a sign of continued caution over concerns about beachfront apartments three years after the incident. Fatal collapse of a condominium in Surfside in Miami-Dade County.

WPTV investigative reporter Dave Bohman went to the beach front of Ocean Edge Condominiums. WPTV was there just after Riviera Beach’s building inspector inspected it Wednesday morning.

Although the damage appeared extensive, building inspector Michael Grim told Bohman it was largely cosmetic and showed no signs of corrosion or weakness in the main support columns holding the building up.

The damage is in the concrete-like hard sand that fills between the columns.

Grim spoke with the construction project’s engineer and told him the condo was designed to withstand occasional tidal floods.

The high-rise was built in 2008, which means many older apartments are not subject to the stringent inspections required under new state laws.

WPTV will monitor this situation and report the latest developments.
