Cankton Elementary School was closed today after its long-time janitor was found dead at the school.

John J. Miller, 61, of Arnaudville, had been employed as a janitor at the school for many years.

“It is with great sadness that faculty members made an unfortunate discovery to find a long-time janitor of Cankton Elementary School lying unresponsive on the floor this morning. When emergency crews arrived, it was clear that the gentleman identified as John J Miller, 61, of Arnaudville, medical “He died of his problems.”

The school was closed for a day and notifications were sent to students’ parents regarding the unfortunate problems experienced.

The deceased was taken by Melancon Funeral Home and the family will make the necessary arrangements.

“We ask that we respect the family during this difficult time,” the statement reads.
