British man rescued from floods in Spain dies, official says

A 71-year-old British man who was rescued from the floods in Spain has died, a local official said.

The head of the Andalusian government said on Wednesday that the man died hours after being rescued from his home on the outskirts of Malaga’s Alhaurin de la Torre.

Juanma Moreno added that the man, whose name was not disclosed, died in the hospital after suffering hypothermia and a heart attack.

He paid his respects to the Englishman’s family in his statement on X, formerly known as Twitter.

At least 95 people died in eastern Spain after flash floods swept away cars, turned village streets into rivers and destroyed railway lines and main roads; This was the worst natural disaster to affect the country in recent memory.

Emergency services in the eastern region of Valencia confirmed 62 deaths on Wednesday.

The central government office for the Castilla La Mancha region added that an 88-year-old woman was found dead in the city of Cuenca.

Rain on Tuesday caused flooding across large parts of southern and eastern Spain, stretching from Malaga to Valencia.

While the mud-coloured waters were dragging vehicles onto the streets at high speeds, pieces of wood were spinning in the water along with household items.

Police and rescue teams used helicopters to get people out of their homes and rubber boats to reach drivers trapped on the roofs of cars.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said dozens of towns were flooded.

“For those searching for their loved ones, all of Spain feels your pain,” Mr. Sanchez said in a televised address.

“Our priority is to help you. We are mobilizing all necessary resources to recover from this tragedy.”
