Three suspects charged in Ebonie Gilbert’s fatal murder

A Jefferson County grand jury indicted three suspects in the capital murder of 39-year-old Ebonie Gilbert; Beaumont police described the case as a brutal, cold-blooded murder that was recorded on a home security camera when the young woman interrupted the suspects who were stealing from her. car.

A grand jury indicted 21-year-old D’Corey Shillow, 21-year-old Javonta Turner and 20-year-old Tydrick Davis with capital murder.

Investigators say the accused gunman is D’Corey Shillow. According to the probable cause of their arrest, the chilling images were captured on Ring Doorbell Camera video. The time stamp shows 8pm on Thursday, September 26, when the suspects are accused of stealing Gilbert’s car in front of his home on Bennett Street. Investigators say in the video Gilbert went outside to see what was happening, but saw a gunman, whom they identified in the video as Shillow, shoot him. Beaumont police said the woman had difficulty returning to her home but collapsed and died.

When Ebonie’s mother was unable to contact her that Friday afternoon, she went to the house to check on Ebonie. That’s when she saw something no mother should ever have to endure: her daughter’s body.

An unspeakable tragedy that his mother has experienced twice so far. He found her body in 2008 when he went to check on his other daughter in Orange. He died of a heart attack.

Neighbors were shaken by Ebonie’s murder. Family members told KFDM they remember Ebonie for her beauty and smile. Everyone describes Ebonie as a radiant and loving woman who would do anything for those close to her.

KFDM/Fox 4 News obtained the Probable Case Affidavit from Magistrate Judge Marc DeRouen and Magistrate Judge Ben Collins Sr. for the arrest of the three suspects. Court documents say 21-year-old D’Corey Shillow admitted to being involved in the shooting and offered details about Gilbert’s killing, including naming Turner and Davis as co-defendants. Shillow also admitted to giving 21-year-old Javonta Turner the clothes he was wearing at the time of the murder, according to court documents. BPD detectives said they found the clothing Sunday when they executed a search warrant at a residence in the 4000 block of Maida. He arrested Turner, who is now charged with murder. The PC assigned to arrest Davis states that he admitted to a witness that he was with Shillow and Turner and was present at the scene of the murder. Court documents show all three men were involved in a carjacking at Gilbert’s home that resulted in his murder.

Justice of the Peace Marc DeRouen set Turner’s bail at $800,000 and ordered him to wear a GPS monitor, remain in Jefferson County and have no contact with the other defendants.

Judge Raquel West set Shillow’s bond at $750,000.

Davis’ bond is $800,000.

KFDM was at BPD headquarters early Sunday evening, Sept. 29, when police walked Turner down the stairs to a waiting patrol car for the ride to the jail. He denied any involvement in the murder, using a string of expletives regarding Shillow’s description of himself as the suspect. When we asked if Ebonie Gilbert had anything to say to her mother and family, she told us no, but did apologize to her own family for what they had gone through.

KFDM: Were you involved in this? Are we just other people involved in this?

Turner: “No, I had nothing to do with that, man.”

KFDM: Were you at home at that location?

Turner: “No.”

KFDM: Do you have anything else to say to the family? Is there anything else to say? Your last chance. Do you have anything to say to Ebony or her mother?

Turner: “No, I have something to say to my family. I’m sorry for putting them in this situation. I’m done talking.”

Judge Raquel West told KFDM/Fox 4 News that a judge increased Shillow’s bail to $750,000 on the murder charge after initially setting bail at $70,000 when sending him to jail Sunday morning. Judge West said that after the magistrate set the initial bail, he received additional information and so increased the bail.

D’Corey Shillow’s mother turned him in Saturday, according to police, and D’Corey Shillow spoke with KFDM/Fox 4 News as officers walked Shillow down the back stairs of Beaumont Police Department headquarters to take him to the jail.

When KFDM asked Shillow if she had anything to say and wanted to explain what happened, she told us, “I mean, I would, but there’s no point in it.” We asked him why they were stealing cars and looking for money. “No, I have money in my pocket,” he said. We asked him the reason for the car theft, he said, “I don’t know.” We asked if they planned it or just picked the house, and he said, “I don’t know.” We asked her mother who found the body if she had anything to say, and she said, “We’re sorry for your loss, Miss Ebonie.” He also said, “I’m not a punk.” “I’m not a monster,” he told us as he got into the police car.

A beautiful, caring, loving daughter, niece, cousin and friend. Some memories of family, friends and others close to Gilbert are shared with KFDM, so you’ll understand why he was important.

“She was such a good person,” Ebonie’s neighbor, Tyson Henry, said. “He organized Christmas for my kids last year and tried to help us with anything we needed.”

Now Ebonie’s family and friends unite to support each other, remembering her love of family, church, travel and beautiful clothes.

Ebonie was a factory operator in Orange and was attending school to improve her life. A life taken at only 39 years old.
