Two senior corrections officers from South Jersey are accused of committing a sex crime against a woman living in a child welfare facility.

Gary Nieves, 53, of Burlington City, and William Young, 35, of Evesham, are charged with sexual assault, criminal sexual conduct and official misconduct, according to the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office. Nieves is also accused of witness tampering.

The crimes allegedly occurred at the Women’s Secure Care and Reception Facility in Bordentown Township.

The investigation is ongoing, the Attorney General’s Office said in a statement on Tuesday.

Anyone with information is asked to call Lt. Garrett Brown at 609-273-8631.

“Allegations that these police officers preyed on a young person in custody have serious consequences,” Attorney General Matthew Platkin said in his statement.

The accusations are merely allegations. No one was convicted in this case.

According to the criminal complaint and probable cause statement, Juvenile Justice Commission facility staff learned of the alleged abuse on Aug. 14.

“The victim later corroborated the allegations against both Officer Nieves and Young,” the Attorney General’s Office said in a statement. he said.

The sexual activity occurred “in various locations throughout the secure care facility, including common areas and the victim’s living quarters,” it said.

The statement also alleged that Nieves and Young were “acting in their capacity as senior corrections officers” when engaging in sexual activity at the facility.

According to the Department of Corrections website, the Bordentown facility is a secure care unit that accepts all young women sentenced to incarceration in New Jersey.
