Many people disappeared as heavy rain caused floods in Spain

Spanish authorities reported scores of people missing after flash floods on Tuesday swept cars through village streets and disrupted rail service across large areas of eastern and southern Spain.

A high-speed train with nearly 300 people on board derailed near Malaga, although railway officials said no one was injured. The flood caused disruptions to high-speed train services between Valencia and Madrid, as well as other suburban lines in the affected areas.

The State Meteorological Agency has issued a red alert due to heavy rainfall in the Valencian Community, which caused flooding to collapse a bridge in Picanya.

According to official reports, municipalities such as Turís and Utiel received around 200 liters of rain per square meter, while many areas in the south and east saw over 100 liters of rain on Tuesday alone.

Authorities warned that adverse weather conditions were expected to continue and urged locals to be careful. “This Tuesday is the most unfavorable day of the episode, but very heavy showers will continue in the coming days,” the agency said on social media platform X.

Spain has faced similar autumn storms in recent years. The country escaped the severe drought this year to some extent thanks to the rains. Scientists say the increase in extreme weather events is likely linked to climate change.
