PHOENIX (AZ Family) — A 19-year-old father shares his incredible story of survival and recovery after the incident He was shot on the job two months ago.

On Tuesday, Jamal Avery was released from rehab and reunited with his family.

“I’m grateful to God, just grateful that He brought me this far and allowed me to come back home,” Avery said.

He had been on the road to recovery since he was shot on Sept. 1.

“I was shot in the shoulder. I was shot in the cheek, and that’s where the bullet came out,” Avery said, pointing to his temple.

Avery also had part of his skull removed due to brain swelling.

The clash occurred as he and his boss Alan Whitworth, 48, were wrapping up a meeting. Construction work near 39th Street and Thomas Road in Phoenix.

“A man with a gun came and wanted to fight, but my boss was there and intervened,” Avery said.

Police said Whitworth, who was engaged to Avery’s cousin, was shot and killed by 31-year-old Marquea Cato before Cato turned the gun on Avery.

Avery’s wife, Letecia, She witnessed the shooting while she was six months pregnant.

“I was so scared that I might lose the baby because I was so stressed in the beginning that I started cramping a lot,” Letecia said.

She said her unborn child was healthy and kicked often when Avery was around. Letecia believes the baby can sense her presence.

Avery and Letecia are still grieving for Whitmore and his family.

“I hope he was saved and thus able to go to heaven. I hope he had God in his heart,” Avery said.

While Avery also pushes herself to walk, eat and regain full strength in her right arm, she relies on her faith and family on the long road to recovery.

“I feel pretty helpless but I will pray and hope my 100% recovery is in God’s plans,” he said.

Avery supported his wife and 2-year-old son. They could lose their home and car because Avery couldn’t work.

They stay with Letecia’s family because Avery goes to physical therapy and speech therapy several times a week.
