A multiple car rear-end crash at a red light that killed four people in Thornton on Saturday was the result of a multiple-car rear-end collision at a red light, police said.

A Ford SUV carrying four people was traveling north on Washington Street when the driver stopped at a red light at Thornton Parkway, according to a news release Tuesday. newsletter From the Thornton Police Department.

The driver of the second car, a Subaru sedan, was speeding north on Washington Street when he crashed into the back of the stopped SUV around 7:30 p.m. Saturday, police said. The crash caused the gas tank to rupture and set the SUV on fire.

A third car, a Chrysler minivan, was also struck in the crash, police said. The driver was not injured.

The car fire killed two adults and two children in the SUV, police said. Four people were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, but their identities were not made public.

Their identities will be released by the Adams County Coroner’s Office at a later date.
