Jay began his career with the Milwaukee Braves in 1953 at the age of 17 and remained on the major league roster until he was 19. He returned to the minors and resurfaced in Milwaukee in 1957. After 1960 he went to Cincinnati. season and saw instant success. He went 21-10 in 1961 and made two All-Star teams that season and finished fifth in MVP voting. He also won 21 games in the 1962 season.

In all, he spent 13 years in the major leagues. the brave ones And Reds. He spent parts of eight seasons with the Braves franchise and parts of six seasons with the Reds. He played briefly with the Atlanta Braves after his departure from Milwaukee. This was in 1966.
