A man has been charged after a tower block was evacuated, a railway line was closed and a bomb squad was called after a “suspicious” substance was found during a police search.

Officers raised the alarm while searching a property on Dalmuir’s Overtoun Court, off Dunswin Avenue, on Monday afternoon as part of an ongoing investigation.

Police Scotland called in the explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team after the “suspicious substance” and evacuated the block of flats and neighboring properties as a “precautionary measure”.

A cordon was established for EOD personnel to conduct a controlled explosion on the device.

Local residents were given the green light to return home at around 2.30am on Tuesday.

Police said in an update later in the morning. Scotland He confirmed that a 26-year-old man had been arrested and charged in connection with a firearm offence.

The suspect is expected to appear at Dumbarton Sheriff Court later in the day.

Chief Inspector Gary I’Anson said: “I would again like to thank the local community for their patience while we dealt with this incident.

“I understand the inconvenience this will cause and I appreciate your cooperation.”

Officers will remain at the scene while the investigation continues.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said the alarm was raised at around 1.18pm and four fire engines and a high-access vehicle were activated.

A spokesman added: “There have been no reported casualties and teams remain on standby to assist emergency service partners.”

ScotRail warned that all lines passing through nearby Dalmuir railway station were closed for a period of time during the emergency response.

The rail operator has since said services will operate as planned but “may still be subject to delays, changes and cancellations”.

Officers have been in the Dunswin Avenue area since the “unexplained” death of a 58-year-old man on October 17.

But a Police Scotland spokesman said: “There is nothing to suggest that the item found at the property is linked to the ongoing investigation into the death of a 58-year-old man.”
