Marathon Plans to Expand Playtesting in 2025

Marathon game director Joe Ziegler gave a brief update about Bungie‘s upcoming extraction shooter. Although details are sparse in the video, it is revealed that they plan to expand the game testing to include more players in 2025.

Marathon director says progress is ‘on track’

In the closing part of the video, Ziegler confirmed that Bungie plans to expand playtesting to more players next year. They plan to add a “significant amount” of testers during these periods and give players a chance to check out the game during development.

“Speaking of 2025, as we said before, we’re really innovating our players, and so we’ll be expanding our playtesting a little bit more in 2025,” says Ziegler. “We aim to add significant players to each of our milestones as we move forward, and some of these major changes are opportunities for all of you to join us.”

Although the platforms or dates of these playtests are not confirmed in the video, Ziegler says they will let players know the details when possible. He also asks players who want to stay updated on Marathon to add it to their wishlist on PS5, Xbox and Steam. Hopefully this means console gaming testing will arrive in 2025.

Ziegler gives a broad overview of how the game is currently in development. He notes that some parts of Marathon are a bit more complete, such as the environments, while others still “come together”, such as the character models. He also adds that enemy models are currently in an “early state.” But he confirms that the game’s development is currently “on the right track.”

“So it’s a little early to show you it all in one piece, but as you noticed… it’s all going well,” says Ziegler. “It’s not all together, but we’re really looking forward to showing you what it looks like when it all comes together, especially in the game.”

The update also reveals images of two Runners, currently named Thief and Stealth. Gameplay details are pretty scarce for both Runners, especially Thief. Ziegler states that they saw both funny and crazy moments while playing with this Runner. Stealth uses deception tools to “track” on the battlefield. Ziegler says he’s played this character “a fair amount” and that they’re a little too strong in their current situation. However, he reassures that these will be balanced when the game launches.

Marathon is part of Sony live service push. Recently, the upcoming extraction shooter potential price tag reported. A specific release date has not yet been announced.
