Second suspect found guilty in 2021 drive-by shooting in Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, Ind. ― Charlie Annamae Moore joins boyfriend Bruce Alexander Jr. as convicted murderer.

Last week, a jury found Moore guilty of murder in the Aug. 31, 2021, death of Jermey Dumas at the northeast intersection of Teal and Old Romney roads. He was also convicted of various assault and conspiracy charges. Moore is also found guilty of a sentence-enhancing charge of using a firearm in a crime.

According to testimony taken from Alexander’s warrant, Moore, now 21, called Alexander the night of the murder to say Dumas was at the door of his Spring Garden apartment and was arguing with people inside.

In response to Moore’s call, Alexander called Willie James III to go to Moore’s apartment in the 300 block of Teal Road, according to testimony at Alexander’s July trial. Once there, Alexander and James waited for Dumas to ride his bike away from the apartment complex.

They followed him, and Alexander shot Dumas multiple times as he rode his bike. Dumas collapsed, struggling to breathe, and died later at a Lafayette hospital.

A grand jury indicted Moore, Alexander and James in the spring of 2022 for murder, various levels of battery and conspiracy.

In Alexander’s case, the lesser charges for Dumas’ murder were vacated to prevent double jeopardy, so Moore’s lesser charges would also be vacated and he would be convicted only of murder. He faces a longer prison sentence for the firearms charge.

In Indiana, murder can carry a prison sentence of 45 to 65 years. Additionally, the penalty increase fee can be increased up to 20 years.

Alexander was convicted in late July and sentenced to 75 years in prison in September. He later pleaded guilty to the Aug. 20, 2021, drive-by shooting on Central Street that injured two people. Moore is also charged with these crimes. His trial continues.

James is scheduled to be tried for murder on November 19.
