NEW YORK (AP) — Actor Timothée Chalamet She made a surprise appearance at her lookalike competition in Lower Manhattan on Sunday; it was a well-attended event that led to police orders to disperse and at least one arrest.

Flanked by bodyguards, Chalamet posed for photos with his high-cheeked, curly-haired doppelgangers, some of whom were dressed as Willy Wonka and Paul Atreides. These were the characters played by Chalamet. “Wonka” and the “Dune” movies. From time to time, adoring fans turned their attention to the lookalikes, apparently thinking they were face to face with the real Chalamet.

The event, advertised on flyers in New York, was one of several similar competitions organized by YouTube personality Anthony Po. As word spread on social media, thousands of people RSVP’d to the event, where $50 was promised to the winner.

But minutes after the pageant started and before the actor could take the stage, police ordered the large group to disperse from Washington Square Park and the organizers were issued a $500 fine for an “unauthorized costume contest.” At least one contestant was handcuffed and taken away, but police did not immediately say why.

“It started out as a stupid joke and now it’s turned into a mess,” said Paige Nguyen, the YouTube creator’s producer.

Most of the Chalamet wannabes and spectators have moved to a new park.

On a makeshift stage, the lookalikes were asked about their romantic plans. Kylie Jenner. Jenner and Chalamet are rumored to be a couple. They were also asked to demonstrate their proficiency in French and what they could do to make the world a better place.

In the end, the audience chose a winner: Staten Island resident and college senior Miles Mitchell. Dressed in a purple Willy Wonka outfit, he threw candy from his briefcase into a crowd of young fans.

“I’m excited and overwhelmed at the same time,” Mitchell said. “There were so many similar people. It was truly ridiculous.”
