INDIANAPOLIS (DİLEK) — This story has been updated with additional information from Indianapolis Fire Department.

More than 50 veterans have been forced from their homes following a massive fire at a veterans housing facility in downtown Indianapolis.

The Indianapolis Fire Department said around 9:35 p.m. Saturday evening, firefighters were dispatched to 958 N. Pennsylvania St. for a report of a building alarm going off. This is Indiana Veterans and Families Assisting Indiana, Inc., a veterans organization in the city’s downtown core. (HVAF) building.

The teams arriving at the scene saw a fire coming from the second floor and began to intervene in the fire. The fire was upgraded to “second alarm” shortly thereafter.

Firefighters requested the evacuation of all companies inside the building just after 10 p.m., IFD crews had to help approximately 18 people exit the building.

The fire was finally brought under control around 1 a.m. Sunday, almost four hours after the initial call went out.

All 51 residents of the facility were displaced, the IFD said. 46 of the 51 residents were in clear condition at the time of the fire. According to HVAF CEO Emmy Hildebrant, all passengers were accommodated in hotels in the area. Many belongings of veterans were destroyed in the fire.

Three slightly injured citizens were taken to a nearby hospital. No injuries were reported from firefighters.

He thanked numerous organizations, including IFD, IndyGo, Living Room Lounge and more, for their assistance to those affected by the fire.

According to the organization’s statement websiteHVAF of Indiana, Inc. works to transform veteran homelessness by “providing life-changing, life-saving services such as housing, employment, case management, therapy, and providing essential food, clothing, and hygiene items in our pantries.”
