Hundreds of Harris-Walz signs were found in some woods in Montgomery County in mid-October.

The dumping ground was just one example of several reports of the theft and vandalism of campaign signs in Philadelphia’s collar counties. Both Republican and Democrat organizers reported an increase.

While people engage in signs every election season, this behavior in the midst of a heated presidential race carries an undercurrent of hostility. It fuels anger and distrust, even leading to disclosure of personal information and social media after threats are reported.

“It’s almost like a signal war here,” said Bob Mason, a Democratic committee member in Levittown. She filed a report following the theft of signs in Bristol Township, as did registered Republican Denise DePaul after a man cut and ripped down a Trump-Vance sign in her front yard.

In other swing states, some communities have moved away from signs altogether to avoid conflicts. Displaying them on private property Protected by the First Amendment. Stealing them is considered misdemeanor theft in Pennsylvania.

“I need to make these people’s stories heard. … So I thought, ‘Look, I’ve got cameras.’ I can take the train, I can take the plane. I can do this,’” St. John.
